What is a Headache?

A headache is a pain or pressure felt in the head, scalp, or neck. It can range from mild discomfort to intense, throbbing pain that can actually mess with your daily activities. Some headaches come on gradually, while others start suddenly. Common triggers include stress, dehydration, poor posture, or tension in the neck and shoulders.

Headaches are extremely common – millions of people deal with them regularly, with migraines alone affecting about 30 million adults in the U.S. While most headaches aren’t dangerous, frequent or severe ones may need professional evaluation to rule out potentially dangerous issues.

Common Types of Headaches

Headaches come in many forms and shapes, and each type can feel a little different. Some are dull and mild, while others are sharp, pulsing, or even disabling. Understanding the different types of headaches can help you figure out what’s causing yours and how to treat it more effectively. Knowing your patterns, triggers, and symptoms of each kind is the first thing that helps with relief.

What are the Most Common Triggers for Migraines

  • Stress. Emotional and physical tension is one of the top reasons people get headaches.
  • Poor posture. Sitting or standing the wrong way can strain neck and shoulder muscles.
  • Dehydration. Not drinking enough water can lead to a dull, throbbing headache.
  • Lack of sleep. Too little or inconsistent sleep often leads to head pain.
  • Eye strain. Too much screen time or poor lighting can cause tension headaches.
  • Skipped meals. Low blood sugar can bring on a headache.
  • Caffeine. Having too much or suddenly cutting it out can both trigger pain.
  • Weather changes. Sudden shifts in temperature or air pressure can cause headaches in some people.
  • Strong smells. Perfumes, smoke, or cleaning products can be irritating to the nervous system.
  • Tight headwear or hairstyles. Anything that puts pressure on your head can lead to tension.
Tension
Tension headaches usually cause mild to moderate pain that feels like a tight band wrapped around your head. It’s the most common type of headache and can make your forehead, scalp, or neck feel sore or tense. Stress, poor posture, and muscle tension are the most popular triggers. The pain is usually steady – not throbbing – and may come and go. Simple lifestyle changes, relaxation, and gentle treatments often help keep it under control.
Migraine
A migraine is a more intense kind of headache that often comes with other symptoms like nausea, sensitivity to light or sound, and some visual changes. The pain is usually throbbing and felt on one side of the head. Migraines can last for hours or even days and may make it hard to go about your normal daily things. They sometimes come with neck tension or stiffness, and not everyone finds relief from standard medications. Chiropractor for headaches may help reduce the frequency or intensity of migraine attacks for some people.
Cervicogenic headaches
A cervicogenic headache starts in the neck but is felt as pain in the head. It’s usually caused by problems in the bones, joints, or soft tissues in the upper neck – often after an injury or nerve irritation. The pain may feel like it’s coming from the back of your head or behind one eye, even though the actual issue is in your neck. These headaches are less common than other types and are considered “secondary,” meaning they come from another health issue rather than starting in the head itself.
Cluster Headaches
A cluster headache is a rare and extremely painful kind of headache that usually hits fast and hard. It often causes sharp, burning pain around one eye or on one side of the head. These headaches tend to come in groups – or “clusters” – happening several times a day for weeks or even months. Then they may disappear for a long time before returning. The pain can be strong enough to wake you up at night. While there’s no cure, treatments can help shorten attacks and reduce how often they happen.

Can a Chiropractor Help with Headaches?

A chiropractor for headaches can help relieve headaches – especially if they come from tension, posture problems, or issues in the neck and spine. Chiropractic treatment for headaches is a natural, drug-free option that focuses on the body and easing stress on the nervous system. Chiropractic adjustment for migraines can help fix joint and mobility issues, and decrease inflammation – all of which may ease headache symptoms and prevent them from coming back.

If your pain is coming from musculoskeletal issues, chiropractic for migraine care is likely one of the best choices available. It targets the cause rather than just masking the symptoms, making it highly effective in treating related headaches.

Possible Risks of Headache and Migraine

chiropractic treatment for headaches

Most headaches are temporary and manageable, but certain types – especially migraines – can lead to more serious complications if left untreated. One notable risk is medication overuse headache, which occurs when frequent use of pain relievers actually leads to more headaches.

Migraines, particularly those with aura, can be a sign of an increased risk of stroke and heart disease, especially in women who smoke. Besides that, migraines can significantly impact mental health, increasing the risk of depression and anxiety. Individuals with migraines are more likely to experience mood disorders, which can increase the frequency and severity of migraine attacks. Another rare but severe complication is status migrainosus, a migraine attack that lasts longer than 72 hours and may require hospitalization.

Dr Madden is a miracle worker. For over a year I had issues with my feet. She was the 1st to say my calf’s were right! Her acupuncture was spot on and helped right away. The stress caused issues in my neck as well that she helped not only with acupuncture but cupping as well. Her care and compassion is amazing. I will continue on maintenance because she is so amazing. ‼️
Copper Wellness has been a pivotal part of my health journey! The integrative services that are offered are tailored to my needs/situation. Specifically, when I needed to start doing massage therapy for upper and lower back pain, Cameron Sand did a great job from the start making me feel comfortable. Whenever I have a question, they answer it readily and explain how and what they are doing during our session. I’ve seen a huge improvement since working with them and couldn’t recommend them enough!

I sincerely wish that I could give Dr. Stephanie Madden 1 million stars. From the time that I met her for consultation through my entire acupuncture journey with her, she was incredibly attentive, genuine, personable, professional, precise, safe, knowledgeable, skilled, and wise with her work. I saw Dr. Madden for about 1 a little over a year to help resolve physical issues from emotional traumas and sufferings in my life. I cannot stress how different my life is from when I first saw her. She helped me get to core issues in my physical health that other doctors never came close to articulating, let alone being aware. Working those physical issues directly helped me so much with my emotional health. My quality of life now is so much better because of her contributions to my healing journey. After working with Dr. Madden, she is a practitioner that I trust and deeply respect. If anyone ever asks me to recommend an acupuncturist, I would never hesitate to recommend anyone to her. I even recommended her to one of my friends on his journey to receive a heart transplant, and she made a positive impact on his quality of life. He had nothing but positive things to say about her (and now he is thriving with a new heart!). Dr. Stephanie Madden has made a wonderful impact on my life, and I can only imagine the impact she is making on the lives of others whom encounter her. She is someone that has answered her call in life, and is absolutely brilliant at it. Brilliant!
