What Causes Back Pain

According to the Health Policy Institute (Georgetown University), about 18 million Americans – 8% of all adults – experience persistent or chronic back pain. Understanding the cause of back pain can be the first step to finding an effective treatment. Most common causes include:

Poor Posture

Sitting or standing with incorrect alignment puts unnecessary strain on the back muscles and spine.

Muscle Strain

Overuse or sudden movements can lead to strained or pulled back muscles.

Herniated Discs

When the soft tissue between spinal vertebrae bulges or ruptures, it can press on nearby nerves, causing pain.

Arthritis

Conditions like osteoarthritis can affect the spine, leading to stiffness and discomfort.

Injuries

Falls, accidents, or sports-related injuries can damage the spine or surrounding tissues.

Sedentary Lifestyle

Lack of regular physical activity weakens the muscles that support the spine. Weakened muscles can’t fully support your spine which can cause pain.

Excess Weight and Obesit

Carrying extra body weight places additional stress on the spine and back muscles.

Stress

Emotional tension can cause tightness in back muscles, causing pain.

How Does Acupuncture Work to Relieve Back Pain?

Acupuncture for back pain helps by targeting specific acupuncture points for back pain to trigger natural healing processes. When the needles are inserted into these points, they stimulate the nervous system to release endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers.

Besides that acupuncture boosts blood flow to the treated area, delivering more oxygen and nutrients to tissues. It also helps relax tight muscles and reduce tension, which can contribute to back pain. Acupuncture also calms the overactive nerves that can be a cause of chronic back pain. Acupuncture provides a holistic and minimally-invasive alternative to medication or potentially dangerous surgeries.

Lower Back Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture for lower back pain targets specific points on the body to ease pain and tension in the lower back. Here are some of the most commonly used acupuncture points for lower back pain:
  • Bladder 23 (Shenshu). Located near the lower spine, this point is used to strengthen the lower back and ease chronic pain.
  • Bladder 40 (Weizhong). Found at the back of the knee, it helps relax the lower back.
  • Kidney 3 (Taixi). Located near the inner ankle, this point supports overall lower back health and eases discomfort.
  • Gallbladder 30 (Huantiao). Found near the hip, this point addresses sciatica and lower back pain.
  • Du 4 (Mingmen). Located on the lower spine, this point reduces back stiffness and helps you feel more energized.

Upper Back Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture for upper back pain focuses on easing tension, improving circulation, and addressing discomfort in the shoulders and upper spine. Here are some popular acupuncture points for upper back pain:

  • Bladder 13 (Feishu). Located on the upper back near the shoulder blades, this point helps ease tension and pain in the upper back and chest area.
  • Small Intestine 11 (Tianzong). Located in the center of the shoulder blade, this point eases shoulder and upper back stiffness.
  • Gallbladder 21 (Jianjing). Found at the top of the shoulders, it is used to ease tension in the neck, shoulders, and upper back, which can contribute to upper back pain.
  • Du 14 (Dazhui). Located at the base of the neck, this point helps ease upper back and neck stiffness.
  • Bladder 17 (Geshu). Found between the shoulder blades, this point boosts blood flow to help with healing and reduces upper back pain.

I. Love. This. Place! I see both Dr. Mimosa for chiropractic and Dr. Madden for acupuncture, and they are two of the best practitioners of *any* type of medicine I've EVER worked with. They listen. They care. They genuinely want to help you feel your best. I can't recommend them and Copper Wellness enough.

Dr Madden is a miracle worker. For over a year I had issues with my feet. She was the 1st to say my calf’s were right! Her acupuncture was spot on and helped right away. The stress caused issues in my neck as well that she helped not only with acupuncture but cupping as well. Her care and compassion is amazing. I will continue on maintenance because she is so amazing. ‼️

Copper Wellness has been a pivotal part of my health journey! The integrative services that are offered are tailored to my needs/situation. Specifically, when I needed to start doing massage therapy for upper and lower back pain, Cameron Sand did a great job from the start making me feel comfortable. Whenever I have a question, they answer it readily and explain how and what they are doing during our session. I’ve seen a huge improvement since working with them and couldn’t recommend them enough!

I sincerely wish that I could give Dr. Stephanie Madden 1 million stars. From the time that I met her for consultation through my entire acupuncture journey with her, she was incredibly attentive, genuine, personable, professional, precise, safe, knowledgeable, skilled, and wise with her work. I saw Dr. Madden for about 1 a little over a year to help resolve physical issues from emotional traumas and sufferings in my life. I cannot stress how different my life is from when I first saw her. She helped me get to core issues in my physical health that other doctors never came close to articulating, let alone being aware. Working those physical issues directly helped me so much with my emotional health. My quality of life now is so much better because of her contributions to my healing journey. After working with Dr. Madden, she is a practitioner that I trust and deeply respect. If anyone ever asks me to recommend an acupuncturist, I would never hesitate to recommend anyone to her. I even recommended her to one of my friends on his journey to receive a heart transplant, and she made a positive impact on his quality of life. He had nothing but positive things to say about her (and now he is thriving with a new heart!). Dr. Stephanie Madden has made a wonderful impact on my life, and I can only imagine the impact she is making on the lives of others whom encounter her. She is someone that has answered her call in life, and is absolutely brilliant at it. Brilliant!
